Project Overview

The Breastfeeding Project is a cooperative agreement between NACCHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to increase implementation of evidence-based and innovative breastfeeding programs, practices, and services at the community level. The Breastfeeding Project specifically focuses on provision of peer and professional lactation support to breastfeeding mothers in predominantly African American and underserved communities.

NACCHO has awarded funding to 69 organizations across the country. The long term goal of the project is to increase breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity among African American and underserved women in the United States. This work is also intended to increase access to and opportunities for breastfeeding support within targeted populations using community-level interventions.
